Karl Malone, former Power Forward for the Utah Jazz and L.A. Lakers, elbowed 78-year old arena-usher Maeby West in the forehead while reaching for his large cola. She received 48 stitches.
The incident occured during Game 4 of the NBA Finals when Karl Malone was ready for a drink following a timeout. Sitting in the aisle-seat, his cupholder had unintentionally been occupied by his associate Larry Miller in the next seat, so Karl Malone stored his cola on the stadium-stairs to his left. As he reached back for his drink he elbowed 78 year-old American Airlines Arena Usher Maeby West in the head, knocking her out cold on the stairs with a wound to her forehead. Maeby had been bent over in a sweeping effort to collect a small piece of trash. Immediately after the incident Malone walked away with his hands on his hips while West was attended to by team physicians. At his wife's urging he approached West after she'd been helped up, mumbling an apology to her.
In the post-game interview, Malone told reporters while shrugging: "Karl Malone's gotta drink when he get thirsty. Now I was in position and didn't really know she was there--I was just clearing the way to get a drink and if she was there then I can't do nothing about that, you know? So a lot of people want to say this is on my head, but they don't get to asking themselves if it should be on Larry's head." "Preposterous!" Larry said while waiting for a delayed plane at the airport, "I go out of my way to fly him to the game, and even give him the aisle seat when he asks. Now ask yourself what is he trying to do? He's biting the hand that feeds him." Maeby West received 48 stitches to the forehead, and started at halftime. -NBALeeks
